volunteers, so any support you can offer is greatly appreciated contact us there are lots of ways parents, former gymnasts and other supporters can get involved. from helping out around the club, doing a bit of cleaning or maintenance, helping with fundraising or taking the step into coaching or judging, how to support your gymnast coaching your gymnast involves a three way relationship, with the parent and coach working together to bring out the best in your gymnast. the coach's role is to offer support, encouragement, technical knowledge and development while the parent's key role is to give support, be a good listener, give encouragement, and a hug or two along the road. it's also important to back up the coach. sometimes a gymnast can be at challenging stage in their development, where they need to push through their fears to achieve a move. the coach is experienced and will only ask a gymnast to work a move they are ready for, but sometimes, for the gymnast, this can seem like an impossible request. providing your gymnast with the emotional support and encouragement they need, is very helpful in giving the gymnast, the courage they need to take the next step. the most important thing as a parent is to make sure your child knows that her best effort is good enough. medals are wonderful and of course we aim to win them! but it is more important to us that our gymnasts achieve their personal best and can feel a sense of achievement and self worth. a happy gymnast, that wants to do the sport for herself, is a key attribute to success. get involved interested in coaching or judging? parent helpers and former gymnasts are ideal candidates to help out in a session. you can try out coaching alongside one of our coaches, and if you like it, you will have the opportunity to train up and get qualified both coaching and judging gives parents a great insight into the world of gymnastics, how the skills are achieved and how criteria and deductions are applied as well as coaching there is the option to train as a judge. this role is ideal for those who can't volunteer on a regular basis but can make it to some of the competitions. the first qualification is club judge, which would mean you would mark gymnasts alongside another more experienced judge at competitions. all our volunteer coaches and judges are dbs checked (disclosure barring service) and are registered with british gymnastics as a member. this entitles you to bg insurance to coach/judge in our club. if you are willing to make a commitment to coach/judge on a regular basis then the club will also fund training courses for you provided by the national governing body - british gymnastics you can find out alot more about coaching on the bg website here for information about judging please vist the bg website here are you handy with a set of tools or a paint brush? our building always needs some tlc, so any time you can spare would be much appreciated. spring clean and general cleaning duties. help us keep our gym clean and tidy for your daughter. even 15 minutes with the vacuum makes a difference. fundraising is a major part of running a club, from applying for grants, organising events or even baking some cakes to sell, all help to raise money for new equipment could you help with some simple admin, help take payments at the start of term, join our committee or attend the agm. parent helpers and former gymnasts are ideal candidates to help out in a session. you can try out coaching alongside one of our coaches, and if you like it, you will have the opportunity to train up and get qualified for every competition the club has to provide a judge. we are currently extremely short on judges. it's a great way to better understand the marking system and ideal for those who can't volunteer on a regular basis but can make it to some of the competitions. competitions competitions and levels what level am i? most gymnasts will start at level 7 and work their way up the progressive criteria and skill set. your coach will be able advice you on what level you are working at the moment, with many girls competing at one level, while also training for their next one. competition dates 2017 the dates for the cumbria county and north of england regional competitions have now been announced. we have listed the main competitions we attend. please make sure you are available for the dates that apply to you. gymnast are allowed to compete the year in which they will turn 8 years old. gymnasts tend to begin by competing in two-piece competitions and then move up to competing on all four apparatus. gymnasts compete for individual medals as well as team positions. competitions start at novice, leading to intermediate, county, regional and then national competitions. girls train to a set of regional criteria, working from level 7 through to level 1. selected gymnasts also compete in the ndp (national development programme) regional and national grades. grades demands an extremely high standard in all set moves, as well as the ability to show that the gymnast has full flexibility and strength. gymnasts can achieve a pass, merit or distinction in their grade, as well as win medals. competition dates 2018 novice competitions held in carlisle sunday 4th febraury our club. the film featured many of our gymnasts. the film called fighting for perfection (2014) can be watched on youtube here. about gymnastics what are the benefits of gymnastics gymnastics is a great all around sport, which teaches many key skills that can be applied to many sports. the key fundamentals to being successful in gymnastics and gained from taking part in the sport, are dedication, determination, balance, friendship, co-ordination, flexibility, strength and artistry. gymnastics not only teaches you how to do amazing skills that look effortless and beautiful, but it also teaches you many lifelong lessons. gymnasts learn discipline, to be consistent and patient, to have respect for their peers and their coaches, to work as a team, but also to stand on their own two feet. gymnasts are extremely hard working and learn to deal with failure, to not give in when they do, and then to push past those problems to achieve their goal. all skills that will help them tackle whatever life throws in their path in the future. how to support your gymnast coaching your gymnast involves a three way relationship, with the parent and coach working together to bring out the best in your gymnast. the coach's role is to offer support, encouragement, technical knowledge and development while the parent's key role is to give support, be a good listener, give feel a sense of achievement and self worth. a happy gymnast, that wants to do the sport for herself, is a key attribute to success. floor exercise the floor exercise is performed to music ranging from 30 seconds to 90 seconds long. gymnasts perform tumble runs, normally across the diagonals, consisting of acrobatic moves like round off, flic flacs and somersaults. they must include dance and dance elements such as leaps and jumps. gymnasts are deducted if they step out of the floor area and must use the whole floor during their routine. marks are also given for artistry, the use of choreography and the ease at which they express it. vault the vault varies in height from 110cm to 125cm depending on the gymnasts age and level. gymnasts run down a padded runway and with the use of a spring board launch themselves onto the vault. they can approach forwards or backwards (from a roundoff). gymnasts are expected to land cleanly and demonstrate good technique. falling or stepping on landing incurs deduction, as will lack of height off the table, or distance from the table asymmetric bars the uneven bars or asymmetric bars are made of wood with a metal frame. gymnast perform linked moves moving up and down the bars as well as on an individual bar. the distance between the bars are adjustable depending on the height of the gymnast from 130 centimetres–180 centimetres wide. gymnasts use chalk to grip the bar and also wear handguards. the idea is to create a fluid routine that links moves from one to the other with no pauses. balance beam the balance beam is 16 feet long and only 10cm wide. gymnasts work along the beam doing acrobatic moves such as flic flacs and somersaults and dance such as leaps and jumps. the beam is about 4 feet off the floor and gymnasts have 1:30 minutes to complete their routine. gymnasts build up difficulty by linking moves together. just like on floor, gymnasts are also marked on their dance ability links affiliations, funding and
